New Zealand Fire Service

The New Zealand Fire Service can trace its roots back as far as 1854, when the first volunteer fire brigade was formed in Auckland. The organisation now has around 9,000 career and volunteer fire fighters at 440 fire stations throughout the country. Their mission is to reduce the incidence and consequence of fire and to provide a professional response to other emergencies.

PSL have had a long association with the New Zealand Fire Service, and currently hold a number of supply contracts [Employer of Volunteer FireFighters] with this organisation. We recommend their website www.fire.org.nz as an excellent source of fire safety information.

PSL are also proud to have within our staff both past and current volunteer firefighters, adding real front-line experience to our team.

National Rural Fire Authority

The National Rural Fire Authority is responsible for coordinating the rural fire management activities of New Zealand.

Rural fire fighting in New Zealand is carried out by a force of 3,000 volunteers and part-time firefighters. These volunteers and part-time firefighters belong to 89 Rural Fire Authorities. The RFAs consist of Territorial Local Authorities, Department of Conservation, New Zealand Defence Force, and Rural Fire District committees.

New Zealand Rural Fire Crews have even been called upon to help out internationally, most recently in the tragic large scale wildfires during February and March of 2009 in Victoria, Australia.

The NRFA also manage grant assistance funding for Rural Firefighters and organisations through the Rural Firefighting Fund (see their website for more details), and in many instances the purchase of some of our equipment can be funded this way.

PSL have had a long, close association with many of the NRFA members through direct contact, or via the NRFA’s association with the Forest & Rural Fire Association of New Zealand (FRFANZ).

Forest & Rural Fire Association of New Zealand Inc

FRFANZ is a national association that represents people and organisations concerned with fire and fire protection in the forests and rural areas of New Zealand. Responsibility for fires in these areas lies with the Rural Fire Authorities (RFA); there are 86 RFA’s covering 97% of the land area of NZ. RFA’s can be territorial local authorities, statutory committees, government departments and military. Therefore, the rural fire services are much more diverse that the urban fire service.

FRFANZ’s role is to develop and provide communication links between all those involved in rural fire from the firefighters to national administrators.

PSL are regular attendees at their national conferences, and are proud to support this vital organisation in New Zealand.

UPDATE: FRFANZ have now developed a website detailing the Rural Fire History of New Zealand (click to view) which is an excellent documentary on the history of rural fires and firefighting.
